GPT Image 2.6Flare and Sunburst
OpenAI's newest image model. It still generates and edits images, and it now also makes animated GIFs and SVG vector files from a prompt, lets you mark up an image to show exactly where an edit should happen, and adds a complexity setting for how much planning the model does. Two variants ship in the API: Flare for fast iteration and Sunburst for detailed visual work.
Both variants are live on faktry. Sign up and you get 50 free credits, no credit card required.
Made with GPT Image 2.6
An animated GIF from a single prompt.
What is GPT Image 2.6?
GPT Image 2.6 is OpenAI's image generation and editing model, released in November 2026 alongside Images 2.6 in ChatGPT and Codex. On top of what GPT Image 2.5 does, it can create animated GIFs and SVG vector files from a text prompt, supports markup-guided editing where you draw over an image to show where a change should go, and adds a complexity setting that controls how much planning the model does before it renders. Two variants are available through the API: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, built for fast iteration, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, built for detailed visual work. Both accept prompts up to 32,000 characters and take up to 16 reference images per edit.

Flare or Sunburst?
Same price per image, same quality tiers. The difference is speed against detail.
GPT-Image-2.6 Flare
Built for fast iteration. Use it for drafts, social content, animated GIFs and high-volume generation, where you want to look, adjust and go again quickly.
Best for: everyday generation, fast iteration, GIFs, large batches
The default choice
GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst
Built for detailed visual work, where the result has to hold up. Use it for campaign creative, polished product imagery and precision edits.
Best for: final assets, detailed edits, brand-critical work
The detail option
Both variants cost the same on faktry. Start with Flare and switch to Sunburst when the result needs more detail.
GPT Image 2.6 vs GPT Image 2.5
What you can do on faktry with each generation.
| Capability | GPT Image 2.5 | GPT Image 2.6 |
|---|---|---|
| Animated GIFs | Not available | Animated GIFs from a prompt, 2 to 16 frames |
| SVG output | Not available | SVG vector files from a prompt |
| Markup-guided edits | Not available | Upload a transparent layer that marks where the edit should happen |
| Complexity setting | Not available | low, medium or high planning effort, no extra fee |
| Quality tiers | low, medium, high, xhigh, max | low, medium, high, xhigh, max |
| Cost on faktry | Priced by quality tier | 6 to 40 credits for a square image, priced by quality tier |
What it costs
GPT Image 2.6 is billed by quality tier, so drafts stay cheaper and only final renders cost full credits. Prices below are for a square image; portrait and landscape frames are around 20% cheaper.
| Quality | Credits | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| low | 6 | Thumbnails, layout tests, quick drafts |
| medium | 9 | Concepting and internal review |
| high | 10 | The default. Finished work for most uses |
| xhigh | 20 | Detail-critical assets, large prints |
| max | 40 | Maximum detail, when nothing less will do |
Editing starts at 8 credits plus 2 per reference image, so an ordinary one-reference edit at high quality lands at 10 credits. A markup layer does not count as a reference. An animated GIF costs more the more frames it has: at high quality, 2 frames cost 7 credits, 9 frames cost 14 and 16 frames cost 21. An SVG is billed like a single image at the quality you pick.
What GPT Image 2.6 does well
The new things it can make and the new control you get over edits.
- Animated GIFs from a prompt
- Describe a short looping animation and get a GIF back: a brand mascot for a campaign, a reaction or meme for social, or an animated storyboard to explore character movement before video production. Pick 2 to 16 frames and how long each one shows.
- SVG you can use anywhere
- Get a vector SVG that is ready to use across websites, apps and print and stays sharp at any size. SVGs are static, with no scripts or embedded photos, and each request returns one file.
- Mark exactly where to edit
- Upload a transparent layer drawn over your image to pinpoint where a change should happen, so the model knows exactly where to make it. The layer must have the same pixel size as the first image.
- Planning effort you can dial
- Complexity controls how much planning the model does before it renders, separately from image quality. Lower settings suit quick edits, medium or high suit scenes with many elements or constraints. It carries no extra fee.
- Up to 16 reference images
- Bring in several references for a character, product or style and edit with all of them in a single call.
- Fast enough to iterate
- Flare is built for fast iteration, so you can generate, look, adjust and go again without losing the thread.
Both operations, one model
GPT Image 2.6 handles generation and editing under the same model ID.
Text to image, GIF and SVG
- Prompts up to 32,000 characters, so a full brief fits

- Five quality tiers from quick draft to maximum detail
- Animated GIF output with 2 to 16 frames
- SVG vector output, one file per request
Image editing
- Up to 16 reference images in a single edit
- Markup layer that marks where the change should happen
- Complexity setting from low to high
- PNG, JPEG and WebP output with adjustable compression
- Five quality tiers from quick edit to maximum detail
What people build with it
Where motion, vectors and precise edits pay off.
- Brand mascots and campaigns
- Animate a brand mascot for a campaign and give a product or a launch some personality in a format that plays everywhere.
- Reactions and memes
- GIFs are the native language of social media. Turn a joke, a mood or a moment into a looping reaction from a single prompt.
- Animated storyboards
- Explore how a character moves before you commit to video production, and test an idea in seconds.
- Logos and icons
- Export designs as SVG so they are ready for websites, apps and print without redrawing.
